Consumption of drugs and substance abuse is a major concern in today’s world. The youths of our generation are most likely to fall for this trap. Drug dealers are adept in targeting such youths and selling them such stuff. But not only the common folk, some rich and famous celebrities had also got involved in this drug snare.
Here is a list of 10 such Bollywood celebrities caught having links with drugs and substance abuse in the past.
1. SANJAY DUTT
One of the well-known faces of Bollywood and a phenomenal actor with about 149 films to his name dealt with drug abuse for a long period of his time. Sanjay Dutt first laid his hands on drugs when his mother (Nargis) was under treatment for cancer. He even carried 1 kilogram of heroin in his shoes while travelling in a flight with his two sisters. In 1982, Dutt was arrested due to a drug case and put to jail for five months. Later, he got admitted to a rehabilitation centre in Texas, USA, for two years. After a long struggle for about twelve years, he emerged victoriously and gave up all forms of substance abuse.
2. RANBIR KAPOOR
Ranbir Kapoor, son of the veteran actor Rishi Kapoor and the most praised actors in Bollywood, confessed in an interview that he was a victim of substance abuse too. He professed that he was hooked to nicotine while he was just fifteen years old. Smoking weed and marijuana also hit his list while he was at filming school. To get rid of his smoking habit, he stated that he had taken trips to Austria, where the doctor used to give injections in his ears as he was unable to give it up himself.
3. MANISHA KOIRALA
The Bombay actress and granddaughter of the former Prime Minister of Nepal Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, Manisha Koirala was also one of the actresses who succumbed to drugs and alcohol when she was at the zenith of her career. She was in the spotlight several times for the usage of alcohol, smoking and drugs as well, which gradually led to the downfall of her acting career. In 2012 she was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer which made her take a life-altering decision of quitting her bad habits. She defeated her disease, came clean and even wrote an autobiography called “Healed: How Cancer Gave Me A New Life” in which she described her perilous journey and how she overcame it.
4. PRATEIK BABBAR
Prateik Babbar who rose to fame from his debut film “Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa” spoke about his long struggle with drug addiction which began at the age of thirteen during his high school. Eventually, he began consuming marijuana, hashish along with cocaine and acid. He said that the drugs had become a dire necessity every morning. One day, when due to an overdose he was stuck with his own vomit for nearly a day he decided to take control of the steering wheel of life. He went to a rehabilitation centre in Mumbai followed by a counselling session which finally made him stable enough to work properly in his life.
5. FARDEEN KHAN
Former Indian actor, Fardeen Khan was also a victim of drug abuse. On 5th May 2001, he got arrested for attempting to buy 1 gm of cocaine from a drug peddler, Nasir Abdul Karim in Juhu. At the court, he stated that he had consumed less than 1gm of cocaine, and the court agreed with his statement. In 2011, the Bombay High Court gave its verdict that the actor would only be charged for trying to buy 1gm of cocaine and would then be sent to rehab for detoxification under the Narcotics Act as a form of punishment. In 2012 he was released on bail. Now he gives all his attention to his family while staying away from any substance abuse.
6. MAMTA KULKARNI
The Thane police caught former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni due to her involvement in India’s most significant drug racket along with her husband, Vicky Goswami. The police had recovered over 20 tonnes of ephedrine that cost around 2000 crores. On failing to appear at the court sessions, it was speculated that Mamta and Vicky took shelter in Kenya where they earlier sold the ephedrine to drug mafia Abdullah. Mamta and Vicky are now criminal offenders under the NDPS Act, and all their properties stand seized.
7. POOJA BHATT
Pooja Bhatt, daughter of Mahesh Bhatt, professed in an interview on how she became obsessed with alcohol consumption and finally overcame it. She said that she probably would have “drank to the grave” if she didn’t put a haul on drinking in the Christmas of 2016. Pooja started drinking when she was a sixteen-year-old girl. Althoug5h consuming high levels of alcohol had made her gain a few pounds, apart from that, she is in a happy space now.
8. PARVEEN BABI
One of the leading actresses of the ’80s is Parveen Babi. When her career was at its peak, she resorted to alcohol and drugs due to problems in her personal life. After splitting up with her then partner Mahesh Bhatt she drank huge amounts of alcohol and began taking LSD tablets. It led to her premature death in January 2005.
9. MEENA KUMARI
Another actress, Meena Kumari, famously known as the Cinderella of Indian Films in between the time of 1930 to 1970 became prey to alcohol. Upon an oppressing marriage with writer Kamal Amrohi, she found her solace in drinking. Meena Kumari died at just 39 as a result of drinking excessive amounts of alcohol which resulted in liver cirrhosis, causing her untimely demise.
One of the phenomenal Bollywood actors who rose to fame like a surging wave, becoming the very first superstar of India came to a crash due to his alcohol addiction. Sources say that as a result of pressures from being a superstar, he found a safe refuge by turning toward alcohol. For fifteen years he remained an acute alcoholic before he became convinced enough to leave his habit altogether. But unfortunately, it was too late, and his liver got damaged beyond repair. Ultimately he died due to liver cancer.
Thus, it can be seen celebrities are no different than us. They too can get embroiled in the viciousness of drugs and alcohol. It just takes a strong determination, will power and disciplined life to avoid such vices.
