If someone needs prompt, accurate, and quick solutions or content, then ChatGPT is no less than a life savior. As it is an AI tool, it acts like a robot that follows all your instructions and delivers content of your choice. Nowadays, AI tools are so much in trend in such a way that AI Tools are preferred over various other search engines. A few famous Ai Tools include ChatGPT4, Google Bard, and many more.
But as we know there are always pros and cons associated with everything. And so is the case with these AI tools. Nowadays, there is a great misuse of this Ai tool which is something worrisome. While the act of creating fake content is not new nowadays, Deep Fake is an act of creating fake images and videos with deep generative methods. People got familiar with this term when a Reddit contributor told of an AI-driven software publicly available to impose the faces of celebrities onto the bodies of people in pornographic videos. Which is indeed ridiculous!
How does deepfake technology work?
Deepfake technology involves a machine learning technique known as a generative adversarial network(GAN) to generate images and videos. This AI-driven software detects facial expressions and movement from its source and copies them in another image or video. To ensure the realism of deepfakes, creators use huge databases of source images, especially that of public figures, celebrities, and politicians. Doing this becomes easy for them as it reduces the chances of detecting deepfakes.
It involves the use of two pieces of software. One uses this dataset to generate a fake video, second software is employed to while the second software is employed to identify any signs of manipulation. The first software continues to modify the fake video until the second software can no longer detect the forgery. This entire process is known as Unsupervised learning. In this learning, the model teaches itself with the experience gained.
What do laws in India say about deepfakes?
The sudden rise of Deepfakes is now becoming a matter of serious concern. There are certain laws to control the misuse of pictures and videos to create deep fake videos. India’s IT Rules, 2021 require that all content reported to be fake or produced using deep fake be taken down by intermediary platforms within 36 hours.
A few days back, a deepfake video of a popular actress Rashmika Mandanna went viral, after this, the Indian IT ministry has also issued notices to social media platforms stating that impersonating online was illegal under Section 66D of the Information Technology Act of 2000. The IT Rules, 2021, also prohibit hosting any content that impersonates another person and requires social media firms to take down these deepfake images and videos when alerted.
Victims of Deepfake in India
The first victim of Deepfake in the film industry was Rashmika Mandana. There was a video showcasing Rashmika Mandanna entering a lift in a black tank top and shorts. In the first look, it is hard to recognize that it is a fake video. It was the body of a woman named Zara Patel. Her head was replaced with Mandanna’s. As soon as the video went viral on social media platforms, it came into notice about this deepfake video. After Rashmika got to know about this video, she reported her fans. She posted with the caption,

“I feel hurt to share this and have to talk about the deepfake video of me being spread online. Something like this is honestly extremely scary not only for me but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused.”
After Rashmika, Katrina got targeted. A deepfake video of Katrina Kaif goes viral. But all this didn’t stop there, it continued and the next target of the deepfake creators was Kajol.

Followed by Kanjol, Katrina, and Rashika, The honorable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi was another victim. While addressing journalists at BJP’s Diwali Milan program in Delhi, he mentioned that AI-powered technological feature has become a serious issue. During his conversation with the people, he told them about his garba video that went viral. ‘I watched my deep fake video in which I’m doing garba. But the reality is that I have not done garba after my school life. Someone made my deepfake video’, said PM.
