Singh had always wanted to be an actor and had taken part in a number of school plays and discussions. His grandma once requested him to dance and amuse her at a birthday celebration. Singh recalls jumping into the grass and dancing to the song “Chumma Chumma” from the 1991 action flick Hum. He enjoyed performing and got to know that he was interested in acting and dancing. However, after enrolling in H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai, Singh found that breaking into the film industry was not simple, as these possibilities were largely given to persons with a film background.

Singh chose creative writing over performing because he thought it was “too far-fetched.” He moved to the United States and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University. At university, he opted to pursue acting lessons and major in theatre. After finishing his education and returning to Mumbai in 2007, Singh worked as a copywriter for a few years at firms such as O&M and J. Mr. Walter Thompson.

He later worked as an assistant director before leaving to pursue acting. He subsequently made the decision to entrust his portfolio to directors. He would attend to all types of auditions but would only receive calls for tiny roles: “Everything was so dreary. It was incredibly difficult. There were times when I wondered if I was doing the right thing or not.”
