That’s how loyalty ends! Kieron Pollard

West Indies and Mumbai Indians (MI) cricketer Kieron Pollard posted a cryptic message on loyalty on Instagram. In 2022, after a 15-year stint with the West Indies team, he bid farewell to international cricket, making his last appearance in the T20I against India at Eden Gardens in February that year.

Later in 2022, Pollard retired from the IPL following an underwhelming season with Mumbai Indians. Scoring only 144 runs in 11 innings at an average of 14.40, he struggled to give the team a strong finish in the slog overs. Subsequently, the MI management named the 36-year-old as the team’s batting coach. Pollard had been associated solely with the MI franchise since his IPL debut in 2010 until his final game in the league.

On Saturday, Pollard posted a mysterious quote on his official Instagram story, expressing the challenges of enduring mistreatment despite demonstrating loyalty. The quote conveyed:

“Once the rain is over, an umbrella becomes a burden to everyone. That’s how loyalty ends when benefits stop.”

Despite Pollard’s post lacking explicit context, social media erupted with fan theories. Many speculated that the cryptic message targeted Mumbai Indians management for appointing Hardik Pandya as the new captain, replacing Rohit Sharma in the upcoming season.

Pollard’s Legacy, Pandya’s Triumph, and MI’s Leadership Shuffle

Rohit Sharma and Pollard, having shared over a decade at MI, winning five championships, and contributing significantly to the franchise’s legacy, maintain a strong bond. Additionally, the veteran cricketer enjoys a friendly relationship with the Pandya brothers. Notably, Hardik Pandya, released by Mumbai Indians before IPL 2022, captained the Gujarat Titans to victory in their inaugural season. He continued this successful leadership into IPL 2023, guiding them to the finals, where they faced defeat against CSK.

In the pre-season trade last November, MI brought back Hardik Pandya from GT to their team. The subsequent month saw them removing Rohit Sharma from the captaincy and assigning leadership responsibilities to Pandya for IPL 2024.

Following his IPL debut with MI in 2010, Pollard participated in 189 matches in the lucrative league. He achieved 3,412 runs at an average of 28.67 and a strike rate of 147.32, featuring 16 half-centuries.

As fans speculate about Pollard’s cryptic message, the Mumbai Indians’ dynamics remain under scrutiny. The intriguing shift in leadership and Pollard’s enigmatic post have fueled curiosity.
