In the 2023 Indian Premier League season, the Mumbai Indians performed well, securing a place in the knockout round and finishing fourth on the points table. Out of the fourteen matches played, they emerged victorious in eight, maintaining a net run rate of -0.044. On Friday, the Mumbai Indians franchise officially confirmed the development by releasing a statement on its website. The statement conveyed:

“Renowned all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to take the helm as the captain of the Mumbai Indians, succeeding its longest-serving, one of the most successful and loved captains the illustrious Rohit Sharma.”

Mahela Jayawardene, Mumbai Indians’ Global Head of Performance, commented on the move, stating:

“Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season.”

Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians to victory in the IPL five times, securing titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.
