In an unexpected development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing a mysterious financial incident related to UCO Bank. Between November 10-13, a substantial ₹820 crore surprised more than 41,000 UCO Bank customers with credits. The abrupt influx of funds has prompted an inquiry, leaving authorities perplexed.

Investigating the Unexplained Surge of UCO Bank

The ongoing CBI investigation revolves around an unusual incident. Where numerous UCO Bank customers witnessed unanticipated credits in their accounts, collectively amounting to ₹820 crore. These unexpected transactions transpired over a span of three days in mid-November. Raising queries about the origin and characteristics of this sudden surge in financial inflow.

Anomalies in Immediate Payment Service (IMPS)

14,000 account holders from private banks initiated 8.53 lakh Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) transactions, depositing mysterious funds into UCO Bank customers’ accounts, adding to the intrigue. Notably, there were no corresponding withdrawals from the accounts that allegedly initiated these transactions.

CBI Launches Nationwide Operation

In response to the perplexing situation, the CBI has launched searches at 13 locations in different cities, such as Kolkata and Mangalore. The nationwide operation seeks to reveal the intricacies of the transaction web that caused unforeseen credits in UCO Bank accounts.

FIR filed by UCO bank

Prompted by a complaint lodged by UCO Bank against two support engineers and other unidentified individuals, the CBI became involved. The complaint revolves around “suspicious” IMPS transactions amounting to around ₹820 crore. The bank’s concerns escalated due to this unexpected windfall, coupled with the lack of corresponding debits, prompting a call for a comprehensive investigation.

Evidence recovered

Continuing their ongoing operation, the CBI has seized electronic evidence vital for comprehending the intricacies of these enigmatic transactions. Recovered items include mobile phones, laptops, computer systems, email archives, and debit/credit cards. Experts expect these discoveries to play a pivotal role in unveiling the complexities behind the unprecedented credits.

IMPS transactions Nationwide

From November 10 to November 13, an astonishing 8,53,049 IMPS transactions were routed from 14,000 account holders in seven private banks to 41,000 Bank account holders. The complexity of this network prompts inquiries into how these transactions were erroneously recorded in UCO Bank account statements, despite the originating banks reporting failed transactions.

UCO Bank ‘s Situational exploitation

Surprisingly, numerous account holders exploited the situation, withdrawing funds from UCO Bank through various banking channels illicitly. This misuse further complicated the repercussions of the mysterious transactions, resulting in unjust gains for those implicated.
