Gandhi believed that the British would eventually leave India, but not if they were met with violence. He didn’t believe in violence because he thought it would only lead to more violence. Instead, he believed in peaceful protests and non-cooperation to show the British that they could no longer rule a population that was unwilling to cooperate.

Gandhi was arrested many times and spent two years in prison. He is most famous for leading the non-violent, non-cooperation movement against British rule of India. This movement became known as Satyagraha, which means truth force or love force. Gandhi gave people a way to fight without hurting themselves or anyone else. For example, instead of boycotting British goods, they would buy them and then return them so that they were not taken off the shelves.

Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, in New Delhi by Nathuram Godse. The assassination occurred just a few minutes after he had finished his evening prayer. A Hindu nationalist and member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Godse was incensed that Gandhi was supporting the idea of an independent India with Muslims participating fully as equals.
