“Today, as a woman and as an actor, I am thankful for my family, friends and well-wishers who are my protection and support system. But if this happened to me when I was in school or college, I genuinely can’t imagine how could I ever tackle this. We need to address this as a community and with urgency before more of us are affected by such identity theft.”
What is a deepfake video?
The term “deepfake” is a fusion of “deep learning” and “fake,” denoting videos that undergo alterations through algorithms to substitute the original person with another, often a public figure, in a manner that convincingly mimics authenticity.
Deepfakes employ a type of artificial intelligence known as deep learning to create fabricated visuals of events that never occurred. The prevalence of deepfake videos has surged with the proliferation of various AI tools. Some of these AI tools are accessible at no cost, further compounding the issue of counterfeit photos, videos, and audio recordings.
