Movies have a unique way of connecting with us emotionally, often more quickly and intensely than books. Whether it’s a heartfelt reaction to a story on paper or the powerful impact of visuals on screen, films can evoke strong emotions. Many writers have explored the relationship between the visual medium and catharsis, explaining why films are used to convey social messages or why emotional ads are effective.
One major factor is the compelling nature of good storytelling. In a well-crafted movie with impressive performances, we find ourselves relating to the characters, experiencing a release of emotions as the story unfolds. Personally, I actively seek out movies that can move me to tears, whether they are purely emotional or provoke deep feelings by addressing challenging questions. Here are 15 of my favourite Bollywood films, both old and recent, that I turn to when I need a good cry.
Chak de India (2007)
“Chak De India!” was a huge hit when it came out. The story is about Kabir Khan, a ex-hockey star who’s accused of betraying his country. To show he’s loyal, he starts coaching the Indian women’s national hockey team.
Taare Zameen Par (2007)
Whenever Aamir Khan takes on a project, you can expect it to be meaningful. “Taare Zameen Par” tells the story of Ishaan, whose parents, especially his father, scold him for doing badly in school. They send him to a boarding school. Fortunately, an art teacher realises he has dyslexia and helps him discover his hidden talents.
Mother India (1957)
“Mother India” is among the three Indian fiction films nominated for the Oscars. It tells the story of a poor, principled woman dealing with the challenges of raising her children and facing debts to a greedy moneylender. Despite the difficulties, she stands firm in preserving her integrity.
Anand (1971)
Featuring two major stars, Rajesh Khanna and the yet-to-be-famous Amitabh Bachchan, “Anand” narrates the tale of a man facing a terminal illness, determined to make the most of his final days.
Masaan (2015)
Taking place in Varanasi, “Masaan” unfolds two stories. One centres around Devi, who wrestles with societal judgment linked to pre-marital relationships. The other revolves around Deepak and Shalu, striving to overcome the societal constraints imposed by their caste-oriented community.
Sadma (1983)
In “Sadma,” featuring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi, Somu discovers Nehalata in a brothel. Realising she has amnesia, which keeps her in a childlike state, he chooses to bring her home and ensure her protection.
3 Idiots (2009)
Rajkumar Hirani is like a skilled conductor who can smoothly control how the audience reacts. It’s incredible to burst into laughter in one scene and then feel tears streaming down your face in the very next one.
Kapoor and Sons (2016)
“Kapoor & Sons” is one of the most touching Hindi movies of late. It’s a warm film about family, delving into intricate emotions in a subtle way. The story revolves around Arjun and Rahul, who come back home to see their ailing grandfather.
Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)
“Kal Ho Naa Ho” is a blockbuster in Hindi cinema, telling the story of Naina, a girl leading a monotonous life until she encounters Aman. Despite Aman saying he’s married, he enlists his friend Rohit to win her over, bringing a new dimension to her life.
Barfi (2012)
There’s not much more to add about Barfi! It’s a gorgeous movie, featuring fantastic camerawork and performances, along with one of the most unforgettable soundtracks in recent memory.
Udaan (2010)
Vikramaditya Motwane’s first film tracks Rohan’s journey as he comes back home to a strict, abusive father after getting kicked out of school. Despite his passion for writing, his father compels him to work in the family factory.
Rang de Basanti (2006)
Upon its release, Rang De Basanti caused quite a sensation. A UK journalist named Sue picks a group of students to act as freedom fighters in her movie, inadvertently stirring up their sense of patriotism.
Masoom (1983)
In Shekhar Kapoor’s direction, Masoom depicts the upheaval in the family of Devendra Kumar when he learns about his illegitimate child from a previous affair. Despite bringing the boy home, his wife refuses to accept him.
Baghban (2003)
Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini take the lead roles in Baghban, narrating the tale of Raj Malhotra and his wife Pooja. They give up everything so their four children can have a good life. However, as the kids grow up, they become selfish and start disrespecting their parents.
The Lunchbox (2003)
I found “The Lunchbox” to be one of the most emotional Hindi movies. It breaks away from the usual movie format. The story revolves around an unusual friendship forming between a widower and a married woman because the lunchbox meant for her husband mistakenly reaches the widower.
