The Loco pilot incident

On Wednesday, at Burhwal junction in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district, more than 2,500 passengers from two express trains found themselves stranded. The staff of one train invoked duty hour limitations, while the loco pilot of the other train cited uneasiness before ceasing their duties. The passengers, left without water, food, or power supply, expressed frustration through a protest, taking to the rail track and obstructing the movement of another express train.

This unfortunate event involved the Saharsa – New Delhi Special Fare Chhath Puja Special (04021) and the Barauni-Lucknow Junction Express (15203). Hours later, the North Eastern Railway (NER) dispatched staff from Gonda Junction to address the situation with the two express trains. According to the railway, the 04021, scheduled to depart on November 27 at 7:15 pm, left its originating station Saharsa on November 28 at 9:30 am, arriving in Gorakhpur over 19 hours behind schedule. The express, which had no scheduled halt at Burhwal junction, unexpectedly stopped around 1:15 pm.

People reacted on this train hault

The passengers travelling on the long route were exhausted. One of the passenger said, “Our journey was supposed to end in maximum 25 hours 20 minutes, but it’s third day in this so called ‘special train’. This is a special torture created by Indian railways for poor passengers like us. There is no water, no pantry car to buy food and no power supply. Both the loco-pilots and train guard have alighted from the train citing drowsiness.”

Visuals from Burhwal junction, shared by sources, depicted numerous passengers trying to obstruct the rail track and urging an immediate resolution for the delayed 04021 express. Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel made efforts to reassure the passengers.

The second train, Barauni – Lucknow Junction Express (15203), already delayed by over five hours and 30 minutes, reached Burhwal junction at 4:04 pm, where the train staff abandoned the locomotive engine.

One of the train’s loco-pilots expressed uneasiness and left the train. Prioritizing passenger safety, new staff was summoned from Gonda junction, and the train departed for Lucknow junction at 5:42 pm. The train reached Lucknow at 7:24 a.m.,” stated railways officials.

Similar incident occurred earlier 

In a dramatic turn of events, a locomotive pilot halted a passenger train midway, stranding hundreds of passengers at Maharashtra’s Chandrapur railway station in the early hours of Monday. The Gondia-Ballarpur MEMU Special train, scheduled to resume its journey after a midnight stop at Mul railway station, remained stationary for over an hour. Frustrated passengers disembarked and sought answers from railway authorities, only to discover that the train driver had refused duty. Angry passengers captured videos of the ensuing confrontation between the loco pilot and the station master, highlighting the plea for written permission to extend duty hours.

Amid a surge of passengers converging on the station master’s office, urging the train’s continuation, the official contended that he bore no responsibility. He maintained that he had issued the green signal at the appointed time, placing the blame squarely on the loco pilot.

After an hour and a half, the station master ultimately granted written permission to the loco pilot, allowing the train to resume its journey towards Ballarpur.

Various media reports assert that the Indian Railway faces challenges in its daily operations and jeopardizes passenger safety due to a shortage of staff.

We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused.”

Simultaneously, director Vivek Agnihotri shared a similar experience, reporting a nearly two-hour delay in his IndiGo flight earlier that day. Abhijeet argued that Shah Rukh is, in fact, an exemplary nationalist, evident in movies like “Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani,” “Swades,” and “Asoka.” He questioned how anyone could make such a claim, especially considering Shah Rukh’s promotion of Hindu culture in his films. Abhijeet attributed the accusations to individuals who distorted their commercial differences, tarnishing Shah Rukh’s image. In the singer’s view, among the Khans, Shah Rukh Khan stands out as the sole nationalist.

The singer, who sang in Shah Rukh Khan’s movies such as “Chalte Chalte,” “Yes Boss,” and “Main Hoon Na,” stated to TOI, “It is these songs that have immortalised Shah Rukh. I will never sing for him again.”

At the India Today Safaigiri Summit and Awards 2018, he claimed that SRK achieved superstardom because of his voice. He asserted, “I made superstars with my voice. This happened shortly after the official announcement that Gujarat Titans had retained him as their captain for the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mumbai Indians’ owners warmly welcomed the star all-rounder back, and Gujarat Titans, in their initial response to the significant IPL trade, disclosed that it was Hardik’s wish to return to his previous franchise.

Hardik Pandya led Gujarat to a remarkable IPL title victory in 2022 during their first appearance in the league. He was named the Player of the Match in the final for his outstanding all-round performance. In the subsequent season, they made it to the final again but lost to MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings. During his two seasons with the Titans, where the team finished at the top of the table both times, Hardik showcased his leadership qualities. As a result, he was entrusted with the role in Indian white-ball matches whenever the regular captain Rohit Sharma opted for a break.

Even with his successful stint at Titans, Hardik gained fame during his time with Mumbai Indians. They signed him for just INR 10 lakhs in 2015 when he was an uncapped player. Surprisingly, Mumbai released Hardik before the 2022 mega auction, and it was Gujarat Titans who then acquired him as their captain.

The Indian all-rounder has spoken up after the transfer, expressing that it stirs up many wonderful memories, and he’s pleased to reunite with the five-time IPL Champions.

Akash Ambani, who owns MI gave a warm welcome to the all-rounder, stating that he brings excellent balance to any team he joins.

“Seeing Hardik back at Mumbai Indians makes me very happy. It is a happy homecoming. He provides great balance to any team he plays. Hardik’s first stint with the MI family was hugely successful, and we hope he achieves even more success in his second stint,” said Akash Ambani.

In a statement on Monday, Gujarat Titans’ Director of Cricket Vikram Solanki disclosed that it was Hardik’s choice to go back to Mumbai Indians, and he wished him the best of luck.

A passenger on the IndiGo flight from Pune to Nagpur was shocked when she reached her seat and discovered that half of the cushion was missing. 

Sagarika Patnaik, a resident of Nagpur, was on a work trip aboard IndiGo flight 6E6798 early on Sunday. Her husband, Subrat Patnaik, informed the Times of India that she had a window seat, specifically seat number 10A.

“When she got to her seat, she was surprised to find the cushion missing,” her husband mentioned. Sagarika brought up the issue with a cabin crew member who, in reply, instructed her to check under the seat for the cushion, he further explained.

Despite searching around the seat, she couldn’t locate the cushion. Sagarika brought up the problem again, but as the boarding was ongoing, she had to wait in the aisle, causing some commotion for her fellow passengers. Eventually, after a bit, a cabin crew member brought her a cushion from an extra seat and put it on Sagarika’s seat.

Subrat Patnaik added, “How can a seat cushion just disappear? This is definitely not something you’d expect from a reputable airline like IndiGo.”

Sources within the airline reportedly stated that the old cushion was removed for replacement due to being dirty, and a spare cushion was given to maintain the aircraft’s hygiene standards.

User Subrat Patnaik posted on X, “#Indigo! #Flight 6E 6798! Seat no 10A! Pune to Nagpur! Today’s status. Best way to increase profit. Pathetic.” He shared a picture displaying the absence of the seat cushion.

In response to Subrat on the social media platform X, the airline explained, “Hi, that’s certainly not good to see. At times, the seat cushion gets adrift from its Velcro. The same can be repositioned with the help of our crew. Further, your feedback will be shared with the concerned team for review. Hope to serve you better in the future.”

Subrat responded to IndiGo’s comment, saying, “Thanks for your reply. But I’m surprised how both the ground staff and the crew missed checking the cleanliness before boarding. This is harming the reputation of a reputed brand like IndiGo.”

Netizens reaction

“Maybe it’s a trial. Sooner or later Indigo may start charging 250-500 for cushions,” posted an individual.

Another joked, “So that the passenger does not fall asleep.”

“Very often the staff really does not get enough time to check in between two flight destinations; it’s that tightly scheduled!” expressed a third.

Some similar incidents also took place recently

Frequent flyer Kanishka Gupta expressed that this kind of carelessness is becoming common. He shared an example from a recent trip where none of the screens were working during a flight from Delhi to Canada. He also noticed life jackets scattered and not in their designated places on domestic flights.

Indigo gives weird reply after a passenger complaints about cushionless seat

Calling the incident unacceptable, aviation analyst Dhairyashil Vandekar stated that airlines shouldn’t provide passengers with broken or unusable seats, regardless of the situation. Vandekar emphasized that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has previously warned airlines about such issues, and if these incidents persist, strict actions should be taken by the DGCA.

In another incident of airline troubles, six passengers on an IndiGo flight bound for Chennai were allegedly persuaded to disembark at Bengaluru airport. They claimed it was because the airline was unwilling to fly to the destination with only six people on board. This happened around 9:30 pm on Sunday at Kempegowda International Airport after the IndiGo flight 6E478 landed. The flight, originating from Amritsar, was en route to Chennai via Bengaluru.

The airline responded, stating that on November 19, 2023, flight 6E 478 was traveling from Amritsar to Chennai via Bengaluru with eight transit passengers. Due to a delay in the incoming aircraft from Amritsar, these passengers couldn’t catch the onward flight to Chennai at Bengaluru Airport. The airline’s ground staff tried to assist passengers in making the connection, but due to time constraints, they couldn’t board the aircraft. IndiGo offered overnight accommodation and booked them on the next available flight. Some passengers opted to stay at the airport lounge. The airline deeply apologized for the inconvenience caused.
