By leveraging deepfake technology, individuals can manipulate videos to make it appear as if someone is saying or doing things they never did in reality. Malicious actors can exploit this tool, posing a risk. To disseminate misinformation and damage the reputation of unsuspecting individuals.

Several renowned celebrities, such as Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Kajol, and Rashmika Mandanna, have fallen prey to this technology. In a recent manipulated video featuring Alia Bhatt, the face of another woman was altered to resemble Alia’s. The video depicted her sitting on a bed in a strappy dress and making inappropriate gestures towards the camera.

In response to the escalating deepfake threat, the Indian government has taken notice, prompting Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar to engage in discussions with a social media platform. During the meeting, he assessed the platforms’ advancements in addressing misinformation and deepfakes. Chandrasekhar further declared that the government would soon release advisories for social media platforms, emphasising the need for complete compliance.

In a post on X, the minister wrote, “A new amended IT Rules to further ensure compliance of platforms, and safety & trust of Digital Nagriks is actively under consideration”.

PTI reported that the majority of social media platforms have adhered to the rules, while those progressing at a slower pace are granted additional time. The government has explicitly stated its commitment to maintaining a “zero tolerance policy” regarding user harm resulting from misinformation and deepfakes. It has been disclosed that a section under CRPC enables the prosecution of deepfakes on grounds of “forgery.”

According to an insider speaking to PTI, “We will assess whether advisories alone are sufficient or if we need to introduce new amended rules within the next seven days. If required, we will implement a more stringent set of rules, emphasising enforcement and deterring those who misuse the platforms.”

The term “deepfake” is a fusion of “deep learning” and “fake,” denoting videos that undergo alterations through algorithms to substitute the original person with another, often a public figure, in a manner that convincingly mimics authenticity. Deepfakes employ a type of artificial intelligence known as deep learning to create fabricated visuals of events that never occurred. The prevalence of deepfake videos has surged with the proliferation of various AI tools. Some of these AI tools are accessible at no cost, further compounding the issue of counterfeit photos, videos, and audio recordings.

In a packet of chicken biryani they had ordered from a local restaurant through Zomato, a food delivery platform. This shocking incident took place at Bawarchi Hotel near Hyderabad RTC Cross Road. Where Vishwa Aditya from DD Colony, Amberpet, had placed an online order for chicken biryani.

As reported by Telugu Scribe, the family expressed that the Zomato delivery person not only brought the expected chicken biryani. But also an unwelcome guest – a dead lizard. Shared on social media with a caption reflecting the family’s dismay. The incident highlighted the perceived negligence of the Bawarchi management in handling the matter.

However, it also exposes the presence of a deceased lizard on the plate, indicating that the lizard had seemingly been cooked with the biryani. As the video advances, the camera shifts to reveal the restaurant’s packaging, from which the biryani was delivered through Zomato.

In response to the tweet, Zomato stated, “We have identified the issue and spoken to the customer. We take this very seriously and are working on appropriate next steps.”

An individual posted, “This hotel has been seized by food inspectors several times already, but why has it been released again? A fine is insufficient for repeated mistakes like this. Playing with customers’ lives and sheer negligence by the management.”

Another person added, “Cease eating out to preserve your lives. It’s just business for these restaurants. They don’t prioritise hygiene.”

A third individual shared, “I won’t be eating biryani again,” while a fourth commented, “Shocking.”

The Mandi tribe in Bangladesh has recently sparked internet shock with their reported practice of men marrying their daughters.

This tradition raises concerns about harmful practices. And prompts a discussion on the delicate balance between preserving cultural heritage and addressing issues.

Situated in the remote regions of Bangladesh, the Mandi tribe is one of many indigenous communities. With a distinctive cultural identity shaped by language, customs, and social structures. Within this community, a prevalent practice involves fathers marrying their daughters as they reach maturity.

The Mandi tribe tradition

According to reports, when a woman becomes widowed. Another man from the community steps forward to marry her, treating her children as his own. However, if the widowed woman has a daughter, the same man will marry her once she reaches a certain age. Initially referred to as a stepfather, the man becomes both the stepfather and husband of the girl. Only after this union will other men in the community consider marrying the widowed woman.

 

This tradition does not involve a biological father marrying his biological daughter. Instead, it typically centres around a stepfather marrying his stepdaughter. Members of this community justify the practice by emphasising that the man provides facilities not only to the widow but also to her daughter.

Meet the victim of Mandi Tribe

Expressing her perspective on this tradition, Orola, a girl from the same community, disclosed that when her biological father passed away, her mother married another man. She initially referred to him as her father but eventually, as she grew older, was compelled to marry him.

 

Orola Dalbot, 30, was compelled to wed her father upon reaching the age of 15. She currently has three children with her father. All of the village’s females her age suffer from this.

During Orola’s early childhood, her father passed away, leading her mother to marry her stepfather, Noten. When Orola reached the age of 15, she was compelled to marry her stepfather. To her surprise, she learned that she and her mother had jointly entered into matrimony with the same man in a combined ceremony when Orola was just 3 years old. This practice was customary in the matrilineal Mandi tribe.

 

“When I found out, I wanted to run,” Orola adds. But her 51-year-old mother Mittamoni advised her to accept it.

Following the demise of my father when my mother was only 25, Orola reflects, “She wasn’t prepared to be single,” adorned in a vibrant blue pashmina. The tribe offered the 17-year-old Noten the chance to marry Mittamoni, but with the condition that he also marry Orola.

“I was too young to remember the wedding—I had no awareness that it took place,” asserts Orola. Discovering that she had to share her mother’s spouse, who had already fathered two children with her, left her devastated. She desires to have a spouse of her own.

Bangladeshi Traditions

Despite widespread belief that the mother-daughter marriage tradition had faded in recent years, it appears that numerous households still adhere to this uncommon practice among the Mandi tribe. Barakat is a word that doesn’t just confine its meaning to happiness, quantity, or blessing; it also focuses on the idea of stability, something I struggled with extensively. I was constantly battling with my soul to reconcile my thoughts and instincts to fix a static picture of my iman and I failed miserably, not just once but a hundred times.

No matter how hard I tried to wrestle to firm my decision, I ended up being the same person with a motive that one day I will change and I will change soon. I kept procrastinating by tricking and deluding my conscience into the idea that I know what I am doing doesn’t feel right but assumed that I will put an end to this whenever the time feels right and I continued to put myself in a vulnerable position.

Where it was always so easy to succumb to the environment that damaged my peace, iman and my relationship with Allah. I continued observing things and twisting my perceptions as I wanted them to be, without truly understanding that the key is to see them as they are, kept trying to escape.

But somehow I always ended up hitting a dead end, in an endless loop with a missing element. That kept torturing me with a longing I was neither able to make sense of nor satisfy. Until I decided to confront my weakness and began to strive and correct my lack of knowledge. And understanding by attaching my heart with the words of Allah.

She further continued

In the great and divine wisdom of the Quran, I found sufficiency and peace. Indeed the hearts find peace when it acquires the knowledge of Its Creator, His < Attributes, His Mercy and His commandments. I began to heavily rely upon Allah’s mercy for my help and guidance instead of valuing my own believability.

I discovered my lack of knowledge of the basic fundamentals of my religion and how my inability to reinforce a change earlier was a result of confusing my heart’s contentment. And well being with strengthening and satisfying my own (shallow and worldly) desires. I discovered my disease of doubt & error that my heart was afflicted with. There are 2 types of diseases that attack the heart. One; DOUBT and Error and the second; LUST and Desire. Both are mentioned in the Quran.

Allah says, “In their hearts is a disease (of doubt & hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease. Quran 2:10]. And I realized the remedy to this could only be attained through the guidance of Allah and indeed Allah guided my path when I lost my wry.

Recently, Indian Journalist Shiv Aroor shared an unconventional opinion on X (formerly known as Twitter), asserting that a dish often praised by North Indians, Kadhi Chawal, is, in his view, rather mediocre.

Shiv Aroor, on the micro-blogging site ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), expressed his view, stating, “Another very mediocre north dish that people go on and on about: Kadhi Chawal.” Similar to his other food critiques known for their sizzle and fizzle, this particular opinion ignited a lively flavour feud in the comment section.

X serves as a platform where individuals are quick to engage in heated exchanges at the slightest hint of provocation. Unsurprisingly, this post became a direct invitation for ridicule, evident from the lively comment section. It was apparent that many commenters held Kadhi Chawal as their favourite dish.

Predictably, the majority did not take kindly to the opinion. Some even suggested that he deserved a fitting punishment, stating he should face a “kadhi se kadhi saza” for expressing such a view! One commentator expressed tolerance when he criticised Parwal (pointed gourd) but felt that disapproving of Kadhi Chawal crossed a boundary. Another speculated that perhaps the individual hadn’t tasted kadhi with ghee, leading to such a perspective.

Others chose to respond with memes, adding to the trend of Shiv Aroor sharing controversial food opinions. Previously, he had labeled Malpua as the worst sweet dish, causing a similar uproar on the internet. Evidently, he remains unapologetic about his bold and controversial culinary viewpoints!
