Going back in time, just 26 years ago, the first episode of the largely popular TV Show, FRIENDS came in with a new type of reality into the mainstream. And right from the very first episode, we got FRIENDS’ statement of intent. They put all their cards on the table that this is not going to be the show about “traditional family values”.

Barely three minutes into the pilot episode of FRIENDS, the audience gets introduced to Rachel – as she bursts through the doors of the now-famous Central Perk in her wedding dress. She hotfooted it straight from the altar, leaving behind her Orthodontist fiance Barry.

Later in the episode, we saw Rachel sit with her high-school friend Monica on her kitchen table while the others try to encourage her to cut the credit cards for which her father was paying bills. It might sound lame but if you observe deeply, it is a symbolic gesture of cutting ties to her family while she starts her new life in the city with her friends, Monica, Chandler, Ross, Phoebe, and Joey. “Welcome to the real world. It sucks. You are going to love it” – these were the words Monica used to welcome Rachel to a group where she becomes an inseparable part. And for decades after that, they have always graced our screens.

In the first episode of FRIENDS, which touched the TV Screens 26 years ago, the audience gets a taste of what exactly the show would be about. Parents were out of the picture. Marriage was abandoned. The people they rely on were just each other. They were six slightly confused twenty-somethings, uncovering their way through jobs, relationships, and life, in general. Not sure where they were heading, but not too stressed up about it either.

Before FRIENDS though, the TV was all about families, families, and families. Enough to make you tired. Even when you were playing with the formula, if a network wanted surefire sitcom hits, they set the show in a family. FRIENDS defied all that to make one of the few sitcom hits without the usual family unit. It proposed the radical view that the new family of the 20th century was not made of relatives, but of friends. The people just like you who are figuring out what they want out of life. This created a new tradition, where friends would go on to inspire the whole new generation of shows by saying “I’ll be there for you..”

The pitch of Kauffman and Crane read – “It’s about friendship because when you are single and alone in the city, your friends are your family.” It’s made clear in early episodes of FRIENDS just why the six characters need each other. In the first few episodes, Rachel discovers her parents are getting divorced and Phoebe talks about her mother’s suicide. The Geller parents come to visit and constantly put down Monica. Later in the series, Chandler reveals that his parents announced their divorce during Thanksgiving dinner, which is why he doesn’t eat Thanksgiving food and Joey discovers that his father is cheating on her mother.

It’s in that first Thanksgiving episode, where their individual plans are foiled and they all end up eating grilled cheese together at Monica and Rachel’s apartment, it becomes clear that families can be messy and unreliable. But in situations like those, it’s your friends you can rely upon. Joey says, “This was nobody’s first choice.” And yet, they always spent the holiday together.

The characters were in their Twenty-somethings, a stage in life where they are too old to stay with their real families, also too young to make a family of their own. That is where the friends came in to fill the gap – in real life and on-screen. The six characters on FRIENDS were always there for each other, even as some pairings moved from platonic to romantic – and back again (but were they on a break?).

The show FRIENDS, pushed the boundaries of what family could look like. It was traditional values that ultimately won out. In 2004’s finale, Rachel sacrifices her career to return to Ross and raise their daughter, Emma together. Monica and Chandler move to the suburbs after they get the babies they desperately longed for. Phoebe has married Mike. Only Joey left single, probably for the spin-off sitcom, Joey.

However, as soon as they both realized what has happened, they were back to the “We Were On A Break” fight but this time with a little more insults for each other.

In the same episode, Rachel takes the last word in their fight when she cracks open one of Ross’ secret by shouting, “Just so you know, it’s NOT that common, it DOESN’T happen to every guy and it IS a big deal!”

When Rachel and Phoebe enroll in self-defense classes, Ross tries to sabotage their confidence by explaining that they won’t be completely safe unless they learn the concept of Unagi! Well, the girls made fun of him by telling him it was some kind of Sushi, but Ross didn’t give up. He tried to scare them on several occasions. However, the girls end up winning the battle. But the most hilarious part is when Ross went to their self-defense teacher and asked him to attack the two girls together. On hearing that the teacher assumed he was some kind of weirdo who wants to attack women. Poor Ross!

Ross’ Sandwich

In this episode, Ross was going through some rage issues because of his failed marriages. And it all comes down to a line when someone at work stole his sandwich. It was not just another sandwich but the special thanksgiving leftover sandwich with Monica’s secret moist maker in it, which by the way made it amazing. Ross loses his calm when he came to know that his boss ate a bit and most of it was thrown away. He screamed so loud that even the pigeons outside trembled in fear.

Joey Doesn’t Share Food

Phoebe set up a date for Joey with her friend but after the first meet, Joey was not interested in seeing her anymore. And the reason was hilarious for most people as he ditched her because she took some fries from his plate. When Phoebe tries to narrate this to Rachel, she confirms by saying that he doesn’t even give a grape to Emma from his plate, so leave alone a fully grown girl!

Phoebe was dumbstruck by the news. But again we were amused and laughing when Joey shouted, “Joey doesn’t share food!” And that’s how a dialogue to be remembered forever was born! Thanks to Joey that now every foodie+Friends Fan can save their plate with ease by quoting the same line.

Ross’ Trip To The Sun

In this episode, Ross gets jealous of Monica’s new bronze skin which she got from the tan spray. After staring at her sister’s legs like a pervert, he decided to try it himself. But the tan process came out to be a little tricky to him, which resulted in multiple sprays on his front and none on his back.

It’s not that Ross gave up on his first attempt, he gave it another shot but unfortunately, the rectification turned out to be a disaster. Chandler as expected blurts out a hilarious comment on seeing Ross. And things get funnier when Ross shows the difference in skin color to Chandler and Monica. Such scenes make us wonder, why wrong things happen to Ross always! Again. poor Ross!

Joey’s Moo Point

It’s surprising to see Joey act smart because we love his cute dumbness. When we think of Joey, things like Joey’s apple come to one’s mind. But expecting something that is logical seems off the table!

The moment he gave his arguments for the Moo Point, not just Rachel but everyone was taken by surprise because it was something that made sense. So you might want to think that Joey was a genius but never showed it in public. Nothing wrong with imagining, after all, it’s only possible in our imagination.

Rachel’s Inside Out Cat

Rachel did pretty hasty things throughout the series but the most striking was when she bought a cat. And not just a regular cat, but an inside out cat! Soon after getting a few scratches and some spooky calls from the cat, she finally realized she needed to get rid of the cat.

It’s funny and sad that she actually found someone to sell the cat. Poor Gunther had to shed double the money to buy the cat thinking it might give her a chance to see Rachel every day. But he was unaware of the fact and that’s what makes us sad. Also, it’s funny that he thought it was some kind of a snake.

They Don’t Know

Monica and Chandler’s relationship got more interesting when Phoebe and Rachel came to know about it. They decided to use their upper hand and force them to confess their relationship to everyone. But it got hilarious when Monica and Chandler realized Phoebe and Rachel might already know about their secret relationship and were trying to trick them.

The series of events in this episode is unforgettable. While watching, all the confusion and Joey’s reactions will make your stomach ache with laughter.

Ross’s Leather Pants

Remember the episode where Ross tried a new pair of leather pants for his date? Well, the date was a disaster as he felt hot in those leather pants and decided to take them off in the washroom. But to his surprise, he was stuck and couldn’t put it back on. He called Joey for help but that was a wrong call! So we know how things ended up for Ross.

And all this while, Chandler, the king of sarcasm was mute because of his New Year resolution that forced him to not make fun of his friends. Chandler was dying from inside to comment on those tight pants but his lips were sealed. However, in the end, the Sarcasm King couldn’t hold it anymore and realized losing money is better than losing his peace of mind. And for Ross, he felt amazing at the end when his son, Ben drew him as a cowboy.

Rachel’s Trifle

Rachel was never a great cook as we know from several occasions on the show. But there’s one notable moment when she left no doubts was when she made the trifle for thanksgiving.

Unfortunately, pages of the cookbook got stuck together and the thing that she made was half trifle and half shepherd pie. Judging from everyone’s reactions, the result was a disaster and everybody tried to find a way to get rid of it. But there was one person who was an exception and that was the fun part! Joey actually enjoyed eating that weird dish and his reply regarding the so-called pie was exceptional.

While watching FRIENDS we have come across many funny incidents that are unreal in practical life but are funny on screen. It’s not our fault actually, the actors are so good at their work that they don’t let us realise how hard it is for them behind the scenes.

It’s commendable that Courteney tried to show us the truth behind the most iconic scene from FRIENDS where she takes a turkey on her head. The video shows how she wrapped a plastic all around her head and then tried hard to bring down the turkey from the top. In the last episode, it’s mentioned that they all lived in Monica’s apartment at some time or the other. But maybe they forgot the fact that all six of them have stayed in Joey’s apartment as well. They were indeed true friends!

The One Where They Don’t Know They Know

FRIENDS was about six people hanging out together, and we enjoyed it always. Be it the central perk or Monica’s apartment; we always enjoyed it when everyone was hanging out together. But at times they would split and have their own little adventures. One such adventure was when Monica and Chandler were dating. They had their own secret life, and it was funny when they tried to hide things from others. Initially, Joey wasn’t aware of their little secret, but later when they looped in Joey, things got even funnier. The time when he had to lie about his underwear or the time when everyone declared him a pervert for looking at Monica’s naked pic., it was all hilarious.

When Phoebe learned about Monica and Chandler dating then instead of confronting them, she thought of a naughty plan. The way she used to tease Chandler all those while and the way everyone was acting against each other couldn’t be more comic. And the final part where “they knew that they knew but they didn’t know that they knew” was like a cherry on top! During all those know-know dialogues, Joey was the one whose face you couldn’t miss watching. Poor Joey!

The One With The Europe Story

The Europe Story thing was great. We know Rachel’s pregnancy was a shock to every one of us and not just Ross. But Phoebe’s wacky efforts to cover up the pregnancy and the way Ross reacted after learning about the baby was all good. But then things got even more interesting when Ross revealed that he accidentally filmed his conversation with Rachel before they got into the act of love.

You remember the story Joey gave to Ross and advised him to use the same when he wants to get someone in his bed. Well, in the recorded conversation we found out that Rachel was really the one who started to entice Ross and then we know how things changed for them forever. But yes we enjoyed the episodes a lot and the Europe Story became memorable.

Phoebe’s Evolution Story

Phoebe is a secret genius indeed! Else how can someone manage to be so cunning and shatter someone’s whole belief system so easily? First, it was Phoebe who said she did not believe the theory of evolution and we know Ross how badly he loved his science. So as expected he put on his PhD Cap and collected all pieces of evidence he could to prove to Phoebe that evolution is real.

But Phoebe managed to just put Ross in a loop of confusion and forced him to accept his defeat. And just when he accepted his defeat the dialogues that came out of Phoebe were humiliating for Ross but hilarious for us. The way she manages to defend and prove herself is exceptional and everyone enjoyed who laughed at those jokes. But I felt sorry for all science geeks though! Maybe it was the moment when they started hating Phoebe. *laughs*

The One With Chandler’s Toe

The flashback episodes in FRIENDS had their own charm. They were unique in a way and never failed to entertain. In fact, some of the moments were the most hilarious ones ever. The one episode during the Season 5 thanksgiving is one you can never forget. That’s the episode where we get to learn that Chandler did have more than one physical deformity. The nipple was weird but losing a toe was another sad story for him, he was even named Sir Limps A Lot for his toe.

The back story of the severed toe made us all laugh and was beautifully show. In the same episode, we also learn why Monica decided to be slim and how badly she was hurt because of Chandler’s one silly comment. But her revenge though not intentional went on too far! Getting a severed toe in return of a silly comment is too much! But we can’t blame Monica either as it was not intentional.

Anyways, the flashback episode where Chandler lost his toe was enjoyable and loved by fans a lot.

Ross And Rachel Finally Kissing

Ross and Rachel were always the most sought out couple, and the world stopped for a moment when they finally kissed after going through so much. The kiss is probably one of the most liked scenes in the show for fans and might also be one of the most iconic scenes on television. In the second season, the chemistry between the two was gradually building up, and later Ross finds out that Rachel has been harbouring feeling for him so it became a catalyst to their relationship. Ross set the torch for her for years, but when they could be together, they messed up.

The two had a passionate argument and eventually parted ways. But then their bond was too magnetic to keep them away for long. And finally, after all the fights, problems, sorrow and more they come back to each other, and the kiss was so divine.

Ross Hits On Cassie

In 2001, Ross and Monica’s cousin Cassie came to visit them. Initially, she stays with Monica and Chandler. The only problem there was that Chandler couldn’t stop staring at her. Cassie then stays with her cousin Ross across the street.

She assumed it should be safe. Well c’mon, they’re cousins! But then Ross develops romantic feelings for his cousin, Cassie. Things went out of control when he made a move on her. Cassie found Ross to be pretty disgusting at that moment, and so did the fans. It clearly shows Ross had a problem with self-control and his inner monologues were as gross as it gets. It would have been nice if he could control himself at least around his family!

Phoebe’s Rat Babies

Phoebe had some really awkward moment on the show, but the most insufferable was when she adopted little rat babies. She found them in her kitchen cabinet, and since their mother died in an accident, so she decided to adopt them. All those while, Mike tried to play nice about it all, but things got over-board when he had to make her understand that the rats would mate and it might create a huge chaos.

Joey Couldn’t Speak French

Throughout the series, Joey Tribbiani is portrayed as a dumb character, to say the least, but the show takes it too far in “The One Where Joey Speaks French.” Joey needed to speak French for an audition, so he took lessons from Phoebe. But when Phoebe asks him to repeat some simple sentences, the words that came out of his mouth were not at all the same.

It goes on throughout the episode, which is hilarious, but after a point, it starts to get uncomfortable to watch as he can’t be so dumb! We know Joey isn’t the brightest, but he’s gotten through life this far, so he should be able to get something so simple. It’s just not funny!

Rachel Pretends To Smoke

In a hopeless attempt to get noticed by her new boss at Ralph Lauren, Rachel starts smoking, which is completely out of character, considering she declared earlier in an episode that she hates smoking. As a Rachel fan, which is honest and real, it’s hard to watch this, because all of the friends are beloved for their realness. So, it hurts to see her sell herself out like this.

Joey And Rachel Try To Do It

If there was ever a moment when FRIENDS fans all collectively yelled at their TVs, it would have been when Joey and Rachel try to do it. Rather than giving what fans wanted, things got out of track. It was awkward enough that Joey falls in love with Rachel, but when she eventually starts returning his affection, which is not convincing at all.

Luckily, not taking long, writers realized their mistake and re-united Ross and Rachel in the end. The ross-Rachel story was always a constant, but the Rachel-Joey thing was not good at all!

Even after some of the bad moments, it is full of power-packed excellent moments. And that is why we still love FRIENDS.

The episode named, “The One Where Chandler Can’t Cry” in season 6 focuses on Chandler’s inability to cry in any adverse situation. All the friends realize in this episode that Mr. Bing never sheds a tear and it’s hard to make him do so. It’s a funny concept, but we all remember instances where Chandler did shed his tears.

One of the most noticeable instances is the one where Ross gives an emotional speech about how much their friendship means to him and chooses both Chandler and Joey as his best man. It was then that we saw all the three guys tearing up.

Mysterious Door Locks

The nature of the door lock to Monica’s apartment seems to change a lot throughout the series. In a season 1 episode, the gang was locked out of the apartment while cooking thanksgiving dinner. In this plotline, the door seems to lock down automatically. But if that was the case, then how did everyone come and go so easily every other time.

Another anomaly comes in season 10 during another thanksgiving. This time Monica and Chandler lock out everyone out of the apartment to teach them a lesson. But Rachel digs out an old key to unlock the door. Here, the odd thing is that the door lock was changed in season 8 after Joey breaks it down. And the lock was changed after Rachel moved out. So how did she get an old key for that new door?

Curious Case of Ben

Ben was Ross’s life soon after he was born. Even the gang had quite a good time with him. But soon after Emma was born, Ben vanished from everyone’s life. His final episode is mid-way through season 8 which leaves us with two seasons without Ben at all.

Also, we did not see any episode where Emma and Ben came in together. It is one thing that could be done easily since they were siblings after all.

However, a few fans came out with a reason that maybe Ross lost custody of Ben as he proved to be a bad father. Do you agree to this?

We know Joey comes from a large family where he has a lot of sisters. But there is some disconnect about how many sisters he really has. In season 1 however, we once heard him saying his mom gave birth to 7 children! Looks like, even he can’t remember how many siblings he has.

Change in Apartment Numbers

There was a conflict even with the apartment number as well.

In the first season, Monica lived at Apartment 5. But soon after, she moved to Apartment 20 in the same building.

The creators never showed us how that happened, or did they really move? We can assume that Monica moved upstairs and arranged her room in an exact manner. We can’t argue with the fact that if Monica wants her house to look a particular way, she would surely do that whatever be the price. But what about the guys? Did they do the same? Or the creators of the show messed it up.

Rachel’s History Of Kissing Women

In season 7, Mellisa, an old friend of Rachel comes to visit. In this episode, Rachel claims to have kissed her in the past. But Phoebe didn’t believe Rachel and said she was way too prude to do that.

But if you remember it right, Phoebe had seen Rachel kissing Monica once already. The episode where Chandler and Joey gave back the girl’s apartment in return for a kiss between Rachel and Monica. So clearly, Phoebe saw them clearly and there was no reason to take Rachel as a prude.

Did Ross and Rachel marry again? Did Phoebe and Mike have kids? Did Monica and Chandler get divorced because of their differences?

Unfortunately, FRIENDS ended on 6th May 2004 when the last episode of the final season was live on TV. Fans had to bid goodbye to their favourite people, but we got lucky that OTTs served it afresh in their platforms. People have watched and rewatched the show several times already. But after the final show, no one got to what happened. It’s all anticipation that we are left with.

We are talking about Chandler and Monica and their love is too pure to get shattered with passing time. They seemed to give the cutest couple goals in the show. And both of them are raising the kids in a great way.

Joey was the one who was left behind. Everyone took home a piece of happiness with them but not Joey. He was the one who was left behind in the same apartment but without his friends. Life was hard for him for many months but eventually, he made things work. He accepted the fact that they are happy in their life and it’s time for him to keep their best friends in the best corner in his heart and move ahead in life. With a lot of time left with him and excess money from “Days of Our Lives”, he made himself better in acting. He took occasional classes and interacted with different people in the industry (This time not just girls and not in his apartment) to improve.

He progressed in his career but his love life was not so good unless he made a girl with whom he again fell in love. And this time, luck has favoured him and now he is dating the girl with whom he might think of spending a lifetime. But let’s see how things work out for them. They have just begun their journey and marriage is still not on the table.

We saw Rachel coming back to Ross and we were so pleased and also shed a tear of joy. But did they continue their love or were back to their “We were on a break mode”?

After Rachel returned, things were different this time, they had a kid to raise and were the only ones from the group left together. They would often miss the others and would connect with them on calls for hours. The emptiness from leaving behind the group and the responsibility of a child kept them bonded and together. They fought at times but not as wild as before because deep in their heart they knew they can’t afford to lose each other another time. They have loved each other for ages and losing that love would not be a wise decision.

Also, they were now matured enough to understand each other and support each other at their work as well. Since both had a career of their own, it helped them a lot when both were supportive.

Long story short, Ross and Rachel finally married again and this time it won’t get into divorce, at least not yet. They are raising Emma to be a beautiful girl and are enjoying their life together.

Yes, she got her big debut around 10 years before “Friends”! She was hired for an advertisement from Tampax who sold tampons. And it was a breakthrough for her. Her use of the word “period” the first time on television, let her touch the stairs of success.

After that, there was no looking back. She posed as a model in a music video of Bruce Springsteen “Dancing in the dark”. This young Alabama model created special stardom for her which lasted a lifetime. She acted in numerous hit series of 1980s such as “Misfits of science”, “The love boat”, “Murder, she wrote”, “Family ties”, and the list goes on!

Some of the early films that shaped her career and also moulded her into the woman and the actress she became were, “ Masters of the universe”,” Mr Destiny”, “ The trouble with larry” and so on! Amidst all this, there’s something for FRIENDS fans that came in today to keep us excited till mid of the coming year.

Today everyone went crazy when Matthew Perry took to Twitter and announced something special. As fans, we all are eagerly waiting to see this come to life for years now. The last episode of FRIENDS went off the TV in the year 2004. And since then we have been longing for that one new episode to continue the joy. It’s been 26 years that the Fans are crying for that one special reunion of the Friends Cast. And finally, the day has come that Matthew Perry acknowledged the fact that this is going to be for real.

Matthew’s Twitter account was today flooded with replies to a post that said that the FRIENDS Reunion is rescheduled for the beginning of March in 2021. Yes! You read it right. The FRIENDS Reunion is going to happen, and it’s not too far away. As he said, it would be a busy year ahead because they are finally going to come together for that one extra Friends Reunion, everyone is looking forward to.

What To Expect In The Reunion?

Matthew Perry did not give many details about the Reunion Episode, but earlier, at occasions, a few scattered information already hit the shelves. From what we know already, the reunion episodes won’t be a sequel or continuation of the show as we know it. Rather, you can expect the six friends, sitting together and remembering those good old days and adding a few humour to whatever they do.

How do we know it? Well, Monica said so!

“The exciting thing is that we’re all going to get together for the first time, in a room, and actually talk about the show,” Courteney/Monica said when she appeared for an episode of Kevin Nealon’s web series named “Hiking With Kevin.”

As we know that the whole cast rarely comes together, to be precise, they came together only twice after the show. And acknowledging the fact, Cox added, “We’re going to have the best time, it’s going to be great. We really haven’t all done that and actually sat there and talked about and reminisced about this incredible experience that we had.”

The reunion was not only anticipated by us, but the cast too seemed curious about it. Back in February, we saw Jennifer posting from her Instagram about the same, but unfortunately, that couldn’t happen.

But today when Matthew announced the revival of the long-waited reunion then we can’t stop imagining how it would be. To give you a small idea of how the new episodes of Friends would be, let’s walk you through some comments by the cast.

In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, David Schwimmer revealed that the reunion or the special would be an unscripted episode. It will be like a really fun interview with many surprises in between. Though it’s hard to picture how things would be anyways it would be fun to watch.

So Would The Cast Be Themselves Or Enact The Characters?

As per the updates we have, the cast will be themselves. I mean Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer won’t take up their on-screen characters in the reunion. Leaving aside the characters, they will only be discussing their journey. We all wanted them to act like the characters and take ahead the story they left behind in the last episode of Season 10. But sadly, that’s not happening! We won’t see Chandler pampering his wife Monica or playing with his twins. We won’t see Joey saying, “How You Doing?” to the next girl he sees. We even won’t see Rachel and Ross fight on petty issues. Yes, we are sad because those characters are not coming.

But on the brighter side, the cast will be sharing a lot about their experience. They might do a mock drill by taking up their characters but that’s not a sure thing yet. We can obviously expect them to enact their characters for a few minutes at least, even though that’s unscripted. We would love to watch them on March 2021 coming together and that matters a lot us as fans.

Now we are just waiting for this year to get over to go into 2021 and go into the year of FRIENDS Reunion. It’s surely going to be a unique experience!
