Lucknow Super Giants managed to retain KL Rahul for Rs 17 crore. In the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League, the Karnataka-born cricketer will lead the team from the front.

He went through a tough spell in the last two seasons at Punjab Kings and is yet to prove his credentials as a captain. The Punjab-based franchise finished sixth on the points table under his captaincy.

Recently he came to the limelight on social media not because of cricket but for one of his Instagram posts when Ayan Shetty, the brother of KL Rahul’s rumored girlfriend, Athiya Shetty trolled him by commenting on his post which went viral on social media.

Ashneer Grover, one of the judges (Sharks) of the business reality show, Shark Tank India, and the CEO of BharatPe made it to the headlines when he recently resigned from the company. His spell in Shark Tank India had been eventful and he developed quite the reputation on the reality show. Ashneer’s life post-television has been event-filled too.

 

Reportedly on Tuesday, Ashneer quit BharatPe, he wrote in his resignation letter that he is leaving with his head high up, despite being ‘vilified’ in the public. Madhuri Jain Grover, his wife, who was also his co-worker was sacked recently from the company for alleged financial irregularities.

After appearing in the first season of Shark Tank India, Ashneer became a household name. His fellow business heads in the show were Vineeta Singh, Anupam Mittal, Peyush Bansal, Namita Thapar, Aman Gupta, and Ghazal Alagh.

Ashneer had several heated interactions with the aspiring entrepreneurs on the show, he is well known for his temper and certain rude encounters with the contestants. During one such encounter, he targeted a trio of founders and asked them to shut their business for not having a sustainable approach.

The three co-founders of a fruit-selling business called Falhari pitched on the show, they asked for Rs 50 lakh in exchange for 2% equity in their company. Several sharks showed interest initially, but Ashneer was unshakeable and against the idea from the start. When a fellow judge, Vineeta made an offer and went over their revenue, Ashneer jumped in and said-

“Ab main bolta hoon ke tum chane ki jhaad pe na chadh jao ek offer ke baad. Tu band kar de. Agar tu ITO ke bahar fruit ka thela kholta, fruit juice ki dukaan kholta, tu isse zyaada dhanda karta, pata hai? Tum sab apni zindagi barbaad kar rahe ho. Yeh dhanda hai hi nahi. Kuch nahi hai dhanda (I don’t want you to get over your heads after this offer. You should shut the shop. If you were to open a fruit stall outside ITO, you’d be making more money than you are now. You’re wasting your time, this isn’t a business).”

Addressing one of them Ashneer added,

“Tu McKinsey mein kaam kar raha tha yaar. Tu kuch bhi problem utha lega na, tu start-up mein kaam kar lega na, tu crore rupaye kamayega saal ka. Tu kya kar raha hai yaar (What were you thinking by quitting McKinsey? If you were to put your mind on something else, you’d be making at least Rs 1 crore annually. What are you doing with your life)?”

Ashneer observed that the most eloquent of the three founders had the lowest equity in the company. He couldn’t digest the fact and called him ‘greedy’. The candidate defended himself by saying, “Equity ki greed nahi hai,” to which Ashneer replied, “Hai greed, tune kya ukhaada hai (What have you achieved)?”

After Vineeta’s offer was rejected by the entrepreneurs, Ashneer added his final words by saying-

“Tum khatam hone waale ho. Mera khoon khaul raha hai ke tumne teen degreeyaan waste kari hain (You’re going to be finished. My blood is boiling, you’ve wasted three degrees).”

Many foreign diplomats have started dissing India’s position after India abstained to vote at the United Nations Security Council’s resolution against Russia for invading Ukraine recently.

The JNU Professor and noted author Dr. Anand Ranganathan responded by dissing those diplomats in the most fitting way.

Russia’s recent Ukraine invasion and the ensuing war have caused a crash in major economies of the world. The United States presented a resolution at the United Nations Security Council that “deplores in the strongest terms” Russia’s “aggression” against Ukraine. India was one of the three countries that abstained to vote.

Though it is important for us to look after our own interests as many diplomatic experts would say. However, certain foreign diplomats believe India’s decision to abstain from voting is “disgraceful,” and “disappointing.”

A British diplomat found India’s response to be “disappointing,” to which Dr. Ranganathan responded by writing, “Not one of you, or your friends in the EU, condemned China when it provoked us, tried to invade us, and killed our soldiers. NOT ONE.”

The context: When Chinese troops crossed into Indian territory back in 2020 & 2021 and killed soldiers in an act of aggression of foreign land, the western powers like the United States and the United Kingdom just stated verbally that it was an unfortunate incident. Dr. Ranganathan points out rightly that during that period neither any resolution was introduced nor did the western country condemn China for its deeds. We were left with no option and had to defend ourselves.

Pointing the inherent pretense that most American and European diplomats have, Dr. Ranganathan, mentioned Kulbhushan Kharbanda’s character from Lagaan, Raja Puran Singh, and quoted, “A thousand diplomats won’t be able to convey what Kulbhushan Kharbanda did in Lagaan in one sentence: Ye gore apne baap ke bhi sage nahin hote,” which means “These white folks aren’t loyal to their own fathers.”

  • It has been reported by Quartz India that in India students who struggle to secure seats in government colleges generally have to pay huge fees at private institutions. Ukrainian medical colleges are a boon to these students. Fees for MBBS in Ukraine can vary from $3,500 to $5000 (Rs 2.65 lakh to Rs 3.8 lakh) per year which is cheaper and affordable for the Indian students given the education standards are high.
  • In addition to the above-mentioned privileges, all of the Ukrainian universities are accredited by the World Health Organization and UNESCO. Besides this, Ukrainian medical degrees are also recognized by the European Council of Medicine, Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, and General Medical Council of the United Kingdom.
  • Another reason for Indian students to opt for Ukraine is that they aren’t required to clear any entrance test to get admission to medical universities.
  • Students also stated that it is easier for them to adjust and adapt as the medium language of instruction is English so they don’t have to worry about learning a foreign language.

  • Students allege that they have been left stranded in Ukraine and without any help since the attacks by Russia.
  • Several of them made appeals to the government desperately to facilitate their safe return.
  • As metro stations could serve as bomb shelters, several of the students are now taking shelter in them.

An Indian student requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath to make quick arrangements to evacuate Indians. The student is Manish Jaiswal, medicine in Ukraine from UP’s Ballia- Video reported by NDTV. Jaiswal said-

“We feel helpless. Three-four bombs have struck the city since morning. We are running low on supplies. Air routes are closed. I request Narendra Modi ji and Yogi Adityanath ji to make arrangements for evacuation of Indians as soon as possible.”

Another Indian student Nilesh Jain, studying in western Ukraine’s Ternopil, said that he and other people have been stuck at the metro station for nearly 30 hours. Jain said-

“The internet connection is not good. We can hear bombs exploding. Please help us. I appeal to PM Modi ji to evacuate us from here quickly.”

As reported by PTI, as Ukrainian stores have stopped trading dollars, many students were not able to exchange their currency.

 “We don’t know what to do. We appeal to the Indian government to rescue us as soon as possible.”

Why the students didn’t leave earlier?

The Indian embassy advised the citizens to leave prior to the invasion on Thursday, then why the students didn’t leave Ukraine? Here are the answers:

  • The students couldn’t leave owing to the excessive costs of plane tickets.
  • One student had told Times of India that his booked ticket for India at Rs 20,000 skyrocketed to Rs 60,000.
  • A fifth-year MBBS student and a resident of Chhattisgarh, Monica said that air tickets were quite expensive and she reached India taking other flights. At first, she took a flight from Kyiv to Doha and then returned to Delhi.

According to News18, another medical student quoted-

“Travel agents are exploiting the situation to mint money. We don’t have so much money. The news of this Russian-Ukraine conflict actually gave them an opportunity to push flight ticket booking charges citing the troubled situation over here, what can we do? We cannot afford this.”

What are they supposed to do now?

Harsh Vardhan Shringla, India’s foreign secretary assured all Indian citizens by saying that the government would take all possible steps to bring them back safe and sound, including students, in Ukraine and their family members.

The Ministry of External Affairs reported to the News agency ANI teams are being sent to the land borders with Ukraine in Poland, Hungary, the Slovak Republic, and Romania to assist the evacuation of Indian nationals.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said-

“To assist in the evacuation of Indian nationals from Ukraine, MEA Teams from @IndiaInHungary, @IndiainPoland, @IndiaInSlovakia, and @eoiromania are on their way to the adjoining land borders with Ukraine.”

Ambassador of India in Ukraine, Partha Satpathy, said that the embassy in Kyiv would continue to operate till every Indian is evacuated.

“The Embassy of India in Kiev continues to operate round the clock 24X7. Today morning we woke up with the news that Kiev is under attack, the whole of Ukraine is under attack. This has generated a lot of anxiety, uncertainty, and created tension. I would like to assure all of you that the Embassy of India continues to operate around the clock looking out for the safety and security of Indians here,” he said.
