“‘RRR’ displays Ram Charan and Jr NTR recreating the fairly young versions of Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem — the groundbreaking freedom warriors from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana”

At the film’s 1st media briefing in Hyderabad, Rajmouli said:

“‘RRR’ displays Ram Charan and Jr NTR recreating the fairly young versions of Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem — the groundbreaking freedom warriors from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana”

Rajamouli also added,

“There are gaps in the lives of these legendary freedom fighters that we don’t know about … It is through this fictional story [that] we’d like to show what could have happened in their lives and what would have happened if they met and bonded.”

Let’s get to know the Real-life Heroes, Alluri Sitarama Raju, and Komaram Bheem, the two revolutionaries who fought for the forest rights of Adivasis:

Alluri Sitaram Raju

Alluri Sitaram Raju

An Indian rebel who led the Rampa Rebellion in 1922 to oppose the 1882 Madras Forest Act enacted by the British. The Act heavily restricted the tribal group’s freedom of movement within their own lands. He is widely known as ‘Manyam Veerudu’ (hero of the forest) though he was not an Adivasi.

The ‘podu’ method of shifting cultivation was followed by many tribes who lived in the Rampa administrative area. The Madras Forest Act, 1882 prohibited them from taking part in podu cultivation so the forests could be cleared and exploited for wood.

Sitarama Raju led attacks on police stations to seize weapons to aid their rebellion after fighting with bows and arrows for a while. The British government announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for Sitarama Raju’s head. He was finally taken into police custody on May 7, 1924, and was killed in a public execution where he was shot while he was tied to a tree.

Komaram Bheem was another rebel who was hiding in a tea plantation in Assam after fleeing from jail. While hiding he learned of Sitarama Raju’s uprising, and being a part of the Gond tribe himself he was inspired to defend the tribe.

He started a rebellion against the oppression of local landowners by the last Nizam of Hyderabad in the early 1900s. The Nizam officials were suspected of seizing crops produced by tribal residents through podu cultivation(shifting agriculture) and claiming a stake in the forest land. From 1928 to 1940, he led guerrilla warfare against the Nizam’s army making Jodeghat village his base. The Nizam government planned to kill him being unable to control the uprising.

According to a journalist, Harpal Singh, when Bheem and his comrades refused to surrender the Nizam officials killed Bheem and many others through open fire. The historical slogan ‘Jal Jangal Zameen,’ which is extensively used in Adivasi struggles until this day was originated by Bheem.

Before RRR, these heroes have been previously portrayed on screen. The film Alluri Seetarama Raju (1974), was a major success. In a 1990 Telugu film titled Komaram Bheem, Bheem’s story has been told. The film also won two Nandi awards (state awards that recognize excellence in Telugu cinema).

S S Rajamouli is a National Film Award-winning filmmaker who linked these two historic strands in his film RRR.

We’ve been talking for two or three days that you should politicize it, you should communalise it, that’s your opinion, but if the film isn’t good then it won’t work. There is no other reason for it to work. You can derive different meanings and ripple effects from it. Yet it is not for me to speak because I have not seen the film. But I haven’t heard from anyone that it’s a bad movie.”

That is the only truth of cinema. If a movie does good business-wise, it has to be a good film, else it won’t work

Vivek Agnihotri’s Wife, Pallavi Joshi Replies On Donating The Kashmir Files Box Office Earnings

Directed by Vivek Agnihotri The Kashmir Files is based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s, it made a huge mark at the box office. The film became a blockbuster by entering the Rs. 200 crore club. Despite facing stiff competition from SS Rajamouli’s RRR, the film is performing well and is in no mood to slow down.

After its success, several people have questioned the filmmaker after the IAS officer, Niyaz Khan urged him to donate the profits to the victims, the Kashmiri Pandits. Reacting to the questions regarding sharing the earnings, Agnihotri and his wife Pallavi Joshi, who is an actress and also played an important role in the film, have criticized people asking such questions.

During an interview with RJ Siddharth Kanan, Pallavi revealed that to fund The Kashmir Files research they have used The Taskent Files earnings. She also added that during their research, they came across children with no access to literature.

Agnihotri then intervened and said,

“From past few years, we are helping the Kashmiri Pandit community and when do you ‘service’ work I don’t like to talk about it. We’ve been doing it for a long time and we’ll keep doing it. It’s been us and them and I don’t think we owe anything to 3rd person”.

Pallavi continued criticizing people who asked to donate the profits of The Kashmir Files, she said,

“I think it’s very vulgar of people to actually ask us, ‘if you earn 400 crores, how many crores will you donate to them.’ This is a very vulgar question for people to ask because the film already has 4 producers. Who gets how much is a very long drawn mathematics. Also, whenever any producer makes money out of any film, they obviously put it to make more projects”.

Check out the interview here:

Recently, comedian Kunal Kamra was also found trolling Agnihotri for not sharing the film’s earnings with Kashmiri Pandits and ignoring the question during a press conference in Lucknow. However, social media users took a dig at the comedian for his act.

Besides Pallavi, The Kashmir Files also stars Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, and Darshan Kumar in important roles.

Reportedly, Agnihotri’s upcoming film will be based on the right to life. He is also set to complete the ‘Files’ trilogy with The Delhi Files.

In an interview with HT City, Yami said,

“We are very happy how the film has been received. And it’s not just the success or numbers but it shows what people connect with or want to see or how they feel. It is something we have not seen before, so it has connected everybody and most importantly, people now feel liberated when they feel they have been heard and got a chance to express what they have been wanting to say for so many years.”

She also added,

“We have read or heard about it (The Kashmir exodus) briefly, but we never knew the details of what exactly happened. When I met Aditya and his family, [they told me] all this has actually happened. And it is so painful. That’s the truth and it was long due to be told.”

However, the actress confessed that she has not watched the film yet:

“I will watch it as soon as I can. I’m just busy shooting and working night shifts plus promoting a film (Dasvi). And The Kashmir Files is not a film which you can just squeeze in time for and go or watch after pack up. So I want to take my time… It’s not going anywhere from theatres. It’s not going to be an easy watch as you can see it from the reactions of everybody who has watched it.”

Yami, who was last seen in web film A Thursday, also revealed that her husband Aditya did book a ticket and reached the theatre, “But, he just couldn’t watch the film,” she said.

He went alone, and tried but just couldn’t enter the hall. It was very overwhelming for him. He said it would be too traumatic to revisit all those memories. It would be too painful and emotional to muster the courage to watch and relive the past even if it’s [via] a film.

When asked to comment on the film is being labelled as a propaganda project that plans on inciting hate and divide people, Yami says that the film The Kashmir Files is nothing as such.

She continued,

“This is beyond filmmaking,” “Also, beyond a point you have to cancel a lot of things in your head. As long as you are a part of something which you believe in and you really like it, then you stick to it. When you know in your heart the intention [with which] something has been made [being tagged as a propaganda] it’s even more painful.”

Referring to the people who are raising questions on the intentions behind this film and talking about the trolls Yami suggested that they should talk to the victims:

“If someone feels the other way, why don’t they speak to people who have spent years and years in those refugee camps? So many of them are still there and it has become a home for them. I think they would be able to answer these people [asking questions] better.”

Yami says that she chooses to go with the sentiment of the people she trusts, she concludes,

“I would love to go with the majority sentiment, with my truth, with what I have heard, and who I trust. And so many people cannot lie. Emotional pain [shown in The Kashmir Files] is beyond all these debates and agendas.”

The blockbuster success of Vivek Agnihotri’s, The Kashmir Files, which crossed the Rs 200 crore mark, has created quite a buzz on the internet. The film is based on the brutal massacre and mass exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits from the valley in the 1990s. A section of the society has not been accepting and disapproved of the film. The movie stirred up a political storm after its release. Mr. Agnihotri has been given ‘Y’ category security with CRPF commando cover. Vivek Agnihotri is now guarded with seven to eight commandos of the CRPF round the clock across India.

According to sources (PTI), the ‘Y’ category security has been provided to Vivek because of his increased threat perception after the release of The Kashmir Files. The Ministry of Home Affairs has taken the decision to provide him with the fourth-highest category security in the country, revealed the sources. Weeks after Vivek Agnihotri claimed his death threat, security was provided to him.

So, what happened exactly?

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama Vivek was enquired about the threats he received after the release of his film. He told,

“Yes, there have been threats. Recently two boys barged into our office when my wife and I were not there. Only a manager, a middle aged lady was here. They pushed her with the door, she fell, they asked for me and then fled. I never spoke about this incident because I didn’t want such elements to get any publicity. I told them not to bother with the security. But they said they have to.”

Vivek is overwhelmed with the unexpected response to his film. He said,

Audiences the world over are watching the film in pin drop silence. 3 hours and 50 minutes is not a joke. People are reaching out to Kashmiri Pandits all over the world. Why is it working so well in Canada? It started with two shows. Now it’s more than ninety shows. The film has connected Indians in conversations and debates everywhere. Ramu (Ram Gopal Varma) has made a video on the success of The Kashmir Files where he says why he hates my film. It’s a brilliant review. We were working on The Kashmir Files for four years. We used our own money. We mortgaged our home. We went to many parts of the world for research. And after all the expenses we didn’t even know what was going to come out of it
